I’m referring to jalebi, which is another popular sweet snack in India. You should treat yourself to this, though, if you’re looking for a deliciously salty and sweet combo, especially in Gujarati cuisine. Both of these are amazing and healthy breakfast choices for anyone and popular treats during festivals like Navratri, Dussehra, and Diwali.

Fafda is essentially a fried rectangle food that is mainly prepared using besan, otherwise known as gram flour. This is the primary ingredient in the Fafda recipe, which explains why the snack is yellow as well.

Along with this, Fafda is flavored with spices and ingredients like ajwain and black pepper. All of this is combined with a little baking soda, oil, and salt to make a soft, smooth dough that is portioned, flattened, and cut into long, rectangular forms.

In this section, we are discussing how to make Fafda at your home. 

  • First, combine the besan/gram flour in a bowl or parat.
  • Now add ¼ teaspoon of carom seeds, A sprinkle of asafoetida (hing), ¼ teaspoon of turmeric powder, ten to twelve roughly crushed black peppercorns, and one, two, or three pinches of baking soda. Mix it very well with a spoon.
  • Now add salt according to your taste or add ¾ teaspoon salt. 
  • Then add water 2 to 3 tablespoons in parts. Start mixing the water with the besan then knead to a stiff dough. Finally, add the oil and stir thoroughly.
  • Blend also and continue to knead then add water if needed. Initially, I added 3 tablespoons of water, and after adding oil, added 1 tablespoon of water.
  • Continue to knead till all the water is soaked
  • When the water is soaked, the stickiness will go away and you will get a soft dough. So, knead till you get a soft, smooth dough. Cover and hold aside for half an hour.
  • After half an hour, make the little balls from the dough. Then cover them with a soft lid of a kitchen towel. This step will not make them dry.
  • On a wooden board, flared oil very lightly. Keep one ball on the lightly greased board.
  • Do not oil the board with much oil as then the fafda cannot be pressed easily. Apply some oil on your palms if you want, before starting the next step.
  • Now, with the heels of your palm and with light force, press and flatten the dough ball and at the exact time move the palms on.
  • You will be left with a long, extended Fafda. Carefully remove it off the board, taking care not to make it too thin so that it becomes difficult to lift.
  • Additionally, you can also lift them with the help of a knife and spatula.
  • Store it on a different plate or board that has been lightly oiled.
  • Now preheat your air frier at degrees.
  • heat to 180 degrees, cooking them until they are golden and crispy.

Make sure the dough is smooth and soft by adding water and oil as needed while preparing the dough.

Additionally, continue kneading the dough until all of the water has been absorbed.

To prevent your dough from drying out, cover it with a cloth.
